In April of 2019 I had the privilege of shooting the brand new Niner Bikes MCR 9 RDO Full Suspension gravel bike. The first painted sample frames had just come in and Niner wanted some imagery to accompany the bikes launch at Sea Otter. Engineer Peter Field and I headed out early to catch first light on some of my favorite roads. I’ve shot these roads before, but every time I go back I see new things, it’s all part of the process I guess. Shooting with my Sony A9 and assisted by an Elinchrom ELB 400 for fill light we made quick work of the morning. Here are a few images from that morning .
Besides just shooting some epic action photos of Peter riding the bike part of the creative brief was to shoot some images that showed off the details of the bike's suspension. This was to be one of the first commercially available full suspension gravel bikes and Niner needed images that would really show that off. I broke out my Elinchrom ELB 400 and shot some posed and riding shots with the suspension visible.
We finished up the morning with a coffee and headed to Niner before shooting part two, riding the bike on a trail. As we arrived at the trailhead to shoot Peter riding some sweet rooty singletrack the sky hazed over giving us perfect bright even light. No flash needed!
