Yesterday Ben Knight posted an awesome run on sentence that really resonated with me, and judging by the comments on his post, with many other creatives as well. I won't rewrite it here, you can read it on his post from 12/30/20. To paraphrase briefly in my own words. Ben talked about something that is inherent in all creative work, and that is the fact that creativity isn't something that happens on a set schedule, even though we constantly have deadlines, whether self imposed or set by clients. Because of that we constantly judge ourselves on our inability to meet said deadlines, and we don't usually win. The number of hours I have spent sitting in front of a desk knowing that I need to get something done but unable to find any inspiration at all is almost endless. However we all have a process, and we just need to give into that process and let it be what it is. We need to support our own creativity, and understand that it doesn't happen on a schedule, and it usually doesn't happen in front of a computer. Often creative play, simply working with our tools and doing things, can bring inspiration, but not always. I really struggled at my last full time job because for years I was expected (by people that had no concept of creativity) to sit at my desk and 'do my work'. It took a while for me to figure that out. I am so lucky now to be working with DEITY Components and especially Eric, the guy in these photos, who understands this implicitly. My creativity often times comes from riding my bike, watching movies, or meditation. Therefore those things aren't extracurricular activities, but an important part of the process. To have this understood by the people I work with is amazing! Love you all, Happy New Years everyone!
